Capt. Richard Sanders assumes role as Director of the Center for Maritime Policy and Strategy

Capt. Richard W. Sanders, Ph.D., a member of the Permanent Commissioned Teaching Staff at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and professor of chemistry, has been named Director of the Center for Maritime Policy and Strategy, or CMPS, as of June 1, 2013.

“Capt. Sanders is ideally suited to bring the inter-disciplinary focus to our new Center,” said Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz, superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  “His intellect, teaching skills, and leadership reflect the finest aspects of our faculty and I am delighted he will lead CMPS.  I fully expect he will build upon the past efforts of our interim directors and exceed my expectations.”

Sanders is a 1987 honors graduate of the Academy and received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 2002.  Previously, he has served as the Associate Dean of Academics, Chair of the Department of Science, and Chief of the Chemistry Section.

“I am honored to be selected as the Director of the Center for Maritime Policy and Strategy and to advance its national and international value, reputation, and prominence," said Sanders. "I am particularly committed to championing and leveraging the interface of Maritime Policy and Science.”

In addition to his academic and teaching contributions, Sanders has directed the Academy’s Coastal Sail Training Program and is an active diver in New England waters. He and his family reside in Lisbon, CT.

The CMPS, located within the Academy's department of humanities, is dedicated to fostering education, research, and innovation in maritime policy and strategy.
