BELLINGHAM Western Washington University’s Youth Programs has announced a new summer program name and format for students entering grades 4-9, Odyssey of Science and Arts, formerly known as Summer Programs for Youth (SPY).

The new Odyssey of Science and Arts program is offered in two half-day sessions, and students may choose to sign up for the full day by selecting a morning and afternoon topic during the weeklong program. The courses focus on in-depth, hands-on learning and feature a variety of unique academic topics not often offered elsewhere.

“Parents have been asking for this type of format for some time and now we are able to deliver the program effectively. The focus is on what we do best, academic enrichment, and this change will allow us to maintain the quality of the programs, while keeping costs lower for everyone,” said Debbie Gibbons, WWU Youth Programs manager.

WWU faculty and local schoolteachers, who are specialists in their selected topics, will teach the courses. Early registration is encouraged to reserve your favorite topic. Take advantage of an early registration discount offered on some programs when you register before March 15, 2010. Registration opens Jan. 4, 2010.

WWU offers a range of programs for youth in K-12 in addition to Odyssey of Science and Arts, including Western Kids Camp (grades K-6), College Quest (grades 10-12), WWU Lakewood Jr. Sailing Camp (ages 11-18), Dance Academy for Youth (ages 12-18), and Summer Youth Theater (grades 1-12).
