Coast Guard and community members turned out Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, for the second annual Fallen Guardians Memorial Race, a paddling event from Hawaii Kai to Magic Island. Four Coasties (Capt. Thomas Nelson, Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Wischmeier, Petty Officer 1st Class David Skimin and Petty Officer 1st Class Joshua Nichols lost their lives in a Sept. 4, 2008 crash of a Coast Guard HH-65. USCGC SequoiaGUAM BUOY TENDER SEQUOIA BACK AFTER DEPLOYMENT
The crew of the 225-foot buoy tender Sequoia returned to its home port of Apra Harbor, Guam, Nov. 3 after a two-and-a-half month deployment through the Pacific. The crew restored an aid to navigation at Kwajalein, partnered with NOAA on locating a missing weather buoy, responded to a search and rescue call and passed a seamanship test in Honolulu with flying colors.

ASBP prison support 2009COAST GUARD AIR STATION THANKED FOR TRANSPORT  
The Hawaii National Guard office of military support stopped by U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point Wednesday, Oct. 28, to present a flag to the Coast Guard men and women who supported a mission earlier this year. Coast Guard C-130 crews helped the State of Hawaii's Department of Public Safety transfer prisoners from Kulani Prison on the Big Island to Oahu after the prison's closure in early October.

Kauhola Lighthouse smallEROSION, SAFETY CONCERNS AT BIG ISLE LIGHTHOUSE
Engineers with the U.S. Coast Guard's Civil Engineering Unit partnered with state preservation experts to determine a reasonable course of action for the Kauhola Lighthouse at a rapidly eroding cliff in the Kohala district of the Big Island. The Coast Guard has contracted to have the 1933 structure removed because of public safety concerns.

RDML May in Honolulu 2009COAST GUARD DIRECTOR OF RESERVE AND TRAINING VISITS

Rear Adm. Daniel May, the Coast Guard's Director of Reserve and Training, visited Sector Honolulu last week to talk with Oahu-based reserves and also visited Hawaii National Guard headquarters at Diamond Head to make a presentation there. May met Maj. Gen. Bob Lee, Hawaii's Adjutant General, to present a plaque honoring Hawaii Guard members' service overseas.

Kauai Auxiliary reading event 2009COAST GUARD AUXILIARY A HIT AT KAUAI KEIKI READING DAY
Members of the 14th District Coast Guard Auxiliary helped the first "Keiki Read To Me Festival" in Lihue, Oct. 24. Auxiliarist Jim Jung set up a safe boating display and talked with more than 300 visitors and handed out more than 150 activity books with crayons with Clifford Inn's help. Visitors to the Auxiliary booth tried on personal floatation devices and got some info on staying safe on the water.

Seafood Festival 2009COAST GUARD AUXILIARY A HIT AT HONOLULU FISH FESTIVAL
Members of the 14th District Coast Guard Auxiliary helped promote boating safety at the Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Festival in Honolulu Harbor, Oct. 11. It was a family and educational event with exhibits on modern and ancient fishing practices, current management measures, fresh Hawaiian seafood, activities, local entertainment and food booths. Kiska dry dockHILO CUTTER HOME IN PORT AFTER 6-MONTH DRY DOCK

The 110-foot patrol boat Kiska returned to Hilo after a lengthy maintenance period on Oahu. The Kiska routinely plies the waters of the main Hawaiian islands on search and rescue and law enforcement missions. New  commanding officer Lt. Charlotte Mundy took these photos of the cutter in its Marisco dry dock. The cutter staged an open house for state and county partners Wednesday, Oct. 14.

SAARPSCO 2009PARTNER NATIONS DECLARE PIRACY CONFERENCE A SUCCESS
Lt. Cmdr. Mike Russo -- an port security liaison officer assigned to Far East Activities -- teamed with the Mauritius Ports Authority to stage a successful SAARPSCO 2009 at Port Louis, Mauritius. The Indian Ocean gathering brought together various port security experts to discuss piracy in the region.
