PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Members of the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries give safe boating tips for National Safe Boating Week, here, Thursday.

The Coast Guard and local agencies will have an increased presence throughout the Memorial Day weekend enforcing safe boating practices.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 66-year-old man off a cruise ship approximately 60 miles east of Cape Hatteras, N.C., Sunday.

A crewmember from the cruise ship Norwegian Jewel called watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads at approximately 4:45 p.m. requesting a medevac for a male passenger who was in need of assistance.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City in Elizabeth City, N.C., launched to assist, hoisted the man and a ship’s nurse and took them to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C.

“We do about 20 hoists like this one, from cruise ships and merchant vessels, a year,” said Tom Botzenhart, search and rescue coordinator at the Coast Guard’s 5th District Command Center. This is yet another example of how the 5th District rescue teams stand ready to perform their mission, no matter what kind, all the time.”

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew medevaced a 47-year-old female off a cruise ship approximately 115 miles northeast of Cape Henry, Friday.

The captain of the cruise ship Norwegian Jewel contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at approximately 5 p.m. reporting they had a woman with abdominal pains who was in need of medical attention.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C. were dispatched to the scene.

The helicopter crew hoisted the woman and her husband off the cruise ship at approximately 7 p.m.

"It is always good when hard work and preparation come together in a successful mission," said Lt. Nicholas Hazlett, the co-pilot of the rescue helicopter. "This was a combined effort of the MH-60 and HC-130 to complete this medevac. The coordination from Sector Hampton Roads and District Five were noteworthy in executing this successful mission. Additionally, the Norwegian Jewel's preparation in receiving the hoist was paramount in orchestrating a swift rescue."

The couple was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

CAPE MAY, N.J. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 61-year-old man off a 73-foot fishing vessel approximately 75 miles east of here at approximately 11:15 a.m. Saturday.

A crewmember from the fishing vessel Debbie Sue called watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay, Pa., at approximately 9:45 a.m. stating a man aboard the Debbie Sue was experiencing chest pains and was in need of assistance.

Crewmembers from Sector Delaware Bay then relayed the call to watchstanders at Air Station Atlantic City, N.J.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City and an HC-130 Hercules long range surveillance aircraft crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., launched to assist the man. Once on scene, Dolphin crewmembers hoisted the man into the helicopter and transported him to AtlantiCare Mainland Campus in Pomona, N.J.

PAMLICO SOUND, N.C. — A Coast Guard helicopter crew hoisted three people from the water after their sailboat ran aground near Rawls Island, Saturday.

Members aboard the Honey Badger, a 26-foot sailboat, made a mayday call via VHF-FM channel 16, notifying Coast Guard watchstanders that their boat was on a shoal near Rawls Island.

Watchstanders dispatched a crew aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet along with an aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City.

The MLB and Jayhawk crews arrived on scene at approximately 2:45 p.m. The MLB crew was unable to reach the sailboat due to shallow water.

The Jayhawk crew then hoisted the three people aboard the aircraft and transported them to Air Station Elizabeth City where they were met by awaiting medical personnel.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 21-year-old man off a 100-foot fishing vessel approximately 70 miles east of here at approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday.

The crew from the fishing vessel Friendship called watchstanders at Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City at approximately 6 a.m. stating a crewmember was experiencing severe abdominal pains and in need of assistance.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City arrived on scene and hoisted the crewmember into the helicopter. The crewmember was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard medevaced a 55-year-old man off a 516-foot motor vessel approximately 200 miles east of Elizabeth City, N.C., in the Atlantic Ocean Friday.

Crewmembers aboard the motor vessel Orange Wave contacted Coast Guard watchstanders stating there was a man aboard needing medical attention.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 5th District Command Center launched crewmembers from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to perform the medevac and a HC-130 Hercules aircrew to assist with communications.

When the crews arrived on scene the conditions ranged from 42 to 45-knot winds with 22 to 26-foot swells.

“We did the hoist from 168-feet to compensate for the 22 to 26-foot seas and the tall super structure of the ship reporting below,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Ian Kesterson, the flight mechanic aboard the Jayhawk. “The water was coming over the bow and the sides.”

The crews arrived on scene and the Jayhawk crew lowered their rescue swimmer to assist with loading the man to the basket to be hoisted. The man was transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va.

“This was a difficult case,” said Kesterson. “Our main concern was finding a proper balance of safety and getting the job done.”

BARNEGAT LIGHT, N.J. — The Coast Guard is investigating the capsizing of a 44-foot fishing vessel 10 miles east of here Wednesday, resulting in one death while another crewmember was rescued by a good Samaritan.

Investigating officers at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia are leading the investigation on the Mandy Ness' capsizing after its emergency position indicating radio beacon was set off at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday notifying the Coast Guard.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the Mandy Ness' crew. We are actively investigating the cause of the incident," said Capt. Meredith Austin, commander of Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay.

The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat and crew from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light.

The crew of the fishing vessel Francis Ann heard the broadcast and arrived on scene where they rescued one of the two crewmembers.

The Dolphin crew medevaced the unresponsive crewmember from the water and who was then transferred to emergency medical personnel and transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Campus in Pomona.

The person was pronounced deceased by the medical examiner at the hospital.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 27-year-old woman off a cruise ship approximately 23 miles east of Hatteras, N.C., in the Atlantic Ocean Friday.

The doctor aboard the cruise ship Enchantment of the Seas contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at 1:05 p.m. stating there was a woman aboard with severe abdominal pain.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 5th District Command Center launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to perform the medevac.

The helicopter crew took the woman aboard at 3:03 p.m. and transferred her to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, N.C.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man after receiving a call for assistance from a cruise ship crewmember approximately 75 miles east of Wilmington, N.C., Monday.

The doctor of the cruise ship Norwegian Gem contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders at 4:39 p.m. stating that there was a 38-year-old man who was reported to be going into shock.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., medevaced the man from the ship and took him to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
