Academy Celebrates Coast Guard's 220 Years of Service

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The U.S. Coast Guard celebrates 220 years of service to America today.

From its genesis as the Revenue Marine, the Coast Guard has evolved to become the world’s premier multi-mission, maritime service, conducting operations around the globe to execute its 11 missions.

http://www.uscg.mil/top/about/

“Coast Guardsmen are agile, adaptable and multi-missioned,” said Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert J. Papp, Jr. “Born as revenue cuttermen, lighthouse keepers, steamboat inspectors and surfmen, we have expanded to meet the maritime needs of our nation. As Coast Guard men and women, we share a bond of pride in our rich heritage and a common purpose to uphold our honorable traditions.”

"This year marks the 220th birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard. As well, for the past 100 years, the Academy here in New London has played a vital role in educating, training, developing, and inspiring leaders of character to serve as effective Coast Guardsmen and selfless public stewards," said Rear Adm. J. Scott Burhoe, superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. "As we commemorate our 220th birthday, we reflect on our heritage and look forward to serving the people of New London for the next 100 years."

The Coast Guard began its service to America in 1790 within the Treasury Department as the Revenue Marine, later renamed the Revenue Cutter Service. The Revenue Cutter Service joined with the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915 to create the Coast Guard. The U.S. Lighthouse Service was added to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939, followed by the Steamboat Inspection Service in 1946. The Coast Guard transferred from the Treasury Department to the Department of Transportation in 1967 and to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003.

U.S. Coast Guard Academy Named a “2010 Great College to Work For”

U.S. COAST GUARD ACADEMY, Conn. – The Chronicle of Higher Education has named the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, for a second year in a row.

The results, released Monday in The Chronicle’s third annual report on the academic workplace, are based on a survey of more than 42,000 employees at 277 colleges and universities, of which only 97 achieved the distinction as a “Great College to Work For.”

“I am ecstatic that our faculty and staff recognized the Coast Guard Academy as a great college to work for, because we really are committed to providing everyone here an environment where they can reach their full potential” said Rear Adm. J. Scott Burhoe, Academy superintendent. “It is because of our faculty and staff that the Academy is able to achieve its mission to educate, develop, train and inspire leaders of character.”

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback. For more information visit The Chronicle’s website at http://chronicle.com/academicworkplace.

WHAT: Engineering Challenge for the 21st Century Program

WHEN: Monday-Friday, July 12-16, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

WHERE: Coast Guard Academy
                  Smith Hall

BACKGROUND: Science teachers come to the Coast Guard Academy for a unique event taking place. The Academy will be bringing 23 Science teachers from across the country to our New London, Conn., campus July 11 - 17 to participate in the Engineering Challenge for the 21st Century Program, which includes the Academy Robotics on the Water project.

AROW is an immersive Science, Technology, Engineering and Math oriented game designed to expose middle and high-school students, and their teachers, to the Coast Guard Academy. The competition brings teams of people together to design and build radio-controlled floating robots that compete in a water filled arena. During competition, teams have four minutes to earn as many points possible as they pilot their robotic craft through a variety of Coast Guard mission oriented tasks. To be successful, groups must be strategic, think critically and demonstrate superb teamwork.

Another key component of AROW is cadet interaction. A cadet mentor is assigned to each team to provide technical assistance in the building of the robots. They also manage the group dynamics to ensure teams function effectively. Cadets have reported that this mentor role was one of the most challenging and rewarding leadership experiences they encountered while at the Academy.

The Engineering Challenge for the 21st Century Program was developed to interest inner-city and underrepresented high school students in pursuing education and careers in STEM. The program will demonstrate the educational value of STEM activities for students, teachers, and mentors, through Project-Based Learning combined with professional and life skills necessary for them to compete in college and in their careers. This population has been traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields of study. Professional and life skills include teamwork, understanding human behavior using the DISC Behavioral Model, personal accountability and technical writing.

The Summer Teachers Workshop is a partnership between the Connecticut College of Technology and its Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing, and The U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The aim of the workshop is to instruct high school teachers and community college instructors on how to integrate the methodologies and activities developed by the Engineering Challenge for the 21st Century Team in their classrooms.

MEDIA NOTE: Media interested in attending the event should contact the CGA Public Affairs Office at (860) 444-8270. AROW is scheduled for Wednesday, July 14.

U.S. COAST GUARD ACADEMY, Conn. - Musician, songwriter and author Darryl McDaniels spoke and rapped to the fourth-class and upper-class government majors on March, 2 2010.

From the musical group RUN-DMC, McDaniels spoke on the topics of writing, music, poetry and media. He addressed both the positive and negative messages in rap and hip-hop music, imploring students to think critically about the truth behind the lyrics. Dr. Karen Wink, English Professor in the Humanities department, invited McDaniels to speak to fourth-class cadets (and many upper-class government majors) who were writing poems for the Academy's annual Poetry Slam competition. Stressing the need for originality in writing, McDaniels’ thoughtful comments inspired the cadets to reflect on the power of words. Several of their comments include: “The hip-hop artist "DMC" really made me think a lot about society and music”; “DMC was amazing; the best speaker in three years, hands down”; and “DMC was a really good speaker.”
