    NORFOLK, Va. -- Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen presented Mr. Vincent Andreone with his 40-Year Federal Government Career Service Certificate and Length of Service Pin at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott on Monday, Aug. 6. Andreone, Chief, Safety and Environmental Health, currently manages support programs for safety, environmental health, and food services for the Coast Guard’s Maintenance and Logistics Command, Atlantic Area, located in Norfolk. Following three years in the Air Force, Andreone began his Coast Guard career in 1970 at the Coast Guard Shipyard in Curtis Bay, Md. He was promoted to assistant Safety Manager in 1975 and then to Safety Manager, Aircraft Repair and Supply Center in Elizabeth City, N.C., in 1978. Andreone’s next assignment was District Safety and Occupational Health Manager in New York City in 1980 before being promoted to his current position as Safety and Environmental Health Manager in 1987. Andreone has received numerous awards including the Department of Transportation Silver Medal for Meritorious Achievement and the Coast Guard’s highest civilian performance award, the Superior Achievement Award. Mr. Andreone and his wife Velda have seven children and 11 grandchildren, and live in Virginia Beach. (U.S. Coast Guard photo)

    ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Romano, a rescue swimmer with Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, performed his first rescue today 48 miles off the coast of Cape May, N.J. The Coast Guard received a call at 8:46 a.m. from a crewman aboard the fishing boat F. Nelson requesting a medevac of fisherman Paul Solon. Romano and a helicopter crew were dispatched to the location of the F. Nelson. Romano was lowered into the water and swam to the boat were he assisted Solon into a rescue basket. Solon was hoisted into the helicopter and flown to Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City and transferred to awaiting emergency medical personnel for further treatment. "It was full of adrenaline and everything else you signed up to do," said Romano. "I joined the Coast Guard to save lives and to do something else than be a loan officer."
