MARBLEHEAD, Ohio - Charles Herndon was awarded the Coast Guard Public Service Commendation Thursday, Nov.1, 2007 at Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio. Herndon was cited for his courageous action, on Sept. 3, 2007, when he recovered a 7 year-old boy after a plane crash off Kelleys Island, Ohio, and provided additional assistance to rescue agencies following the incident. DETROIT - Seaman Justin H. Baine stood by with a tool called the happy hooker, which is designed to hook onto a buoy as the Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay moved alongside the buoy in western Lake Erie, Nov. 12, 2007. Seaman Apprentice David A. Deere was there to assist Baine as they connect the buoy to the crane using the gear on the deck between them that pulled the buoy on the deck.
