Coast Guard Gives Safety Training To Vietnamese Fishermen (149.71 KB)
BELLE CHASSE, La. – Scott Labak, a U.S. Coast Guard civilian fishing vessel safety instructor, demonstrates the steps involved with lighting a flare to a group of Vietnamese and Cambodian fishermen here, today. The Coast Guard provided a boating safety course for the fishermen, with Coast Guard Lt. Thao V. Nguyen translating the training into Vietnamese while civilian Tam Nguyen translated it into Cambodian. “Most of them don’t know how to light a flare, or depoly a liferaft, said Coast Guard Lt. Thao V. Nguyen. "They need to know how to use them, and that’s why we’re here.” The Coast Guard provided flares, a life raft, whistles, a display for proper damage control and a safety slide show for the training.
