• Bellingham High Teacher Jamie Yoos Selected as Regional Teacher of the Year
  Bellingham High School science teacher Jamie Yoos has been named as the 2010 Regional Teacher of the Year by the Northwest Educational Service District (ESD) 189. He is one of only nine teachers in the state being considered for 2010 Washington State Teacher of the Year.
  
• Central Lions Club Donates Heart Defibrillators to High Schools
  The Central Lions Club of Bellingham recently donated automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to Bellingham, Sehome and Squalicum high schools, a gift worth $4,500.
  
• School Year Calendar Updated for 2009-10
  Please click here to view the updated 2009-10 school year calendar for the Bellingham School District. Thanks to the Whatcom Educational Credit Union, families and staff will receive a magnetic version of this calendar in mid-August in the annual back-to-school mailing.
  
• Administrators Take Compensation Reduction to Help Preserve Classroom Resources
  All administrators in the Bellingham School District have graciously offered a reduction in compensation in their 2009-10 school year contracts to help the School Board and Superintendent preserve the future integrity of the classroom experience for every student.
  
• District Students, Schools, Staff Earn National and State Honors for Academic Excellence
  Bellingham School District students and staff from Alderwood, Columbia, Happy Valley, Northern Heights, Roosevelt and Sunnyland elementary schools, Fairhaven, Shuksan middle schools, and Bellingham, Sehome and Squalicum high schools have recently received state and national honors.
  
• Three Bellingham School District Educators Selected by Alcoa for Summer Keystone Center
  Thanks to Ferndale's Alcoa Intalco Works, three Bellingham School District educators have been selected to receive summer training at a national institute designed to provide classroom lessons focused on local environmental issues.
  
• Sunnyland Student is One of Top Braillists in Country
  Tabitha Smith, a fourth grader at Sunnyland Elementary School, is one of 60 finalists attending the 2009 Braille Challenge on June 20 in Los Angeles.
  
• Bellingham Launches New Summer School Virtual Online Program for High School Students
  High school students are encouraged to register now for a new Bellingham Virtual Learning online summer school program that provides instructor-led courses from June 22 through Aug. 7.
  
• Few Spaces Remain for Full-Day Kindergarten with Fall Registration Continuing for All Grades
  All Bellingham Public Schools are now enrolling for fall. Please contact our schools to learn more about program offerings, events to welcome new students and families, tour schedules and opportunities to meet school leaders. Only a few spaces remain for full-day kindergarten at Alderwood, Carl Cozier, Happy Valley and Roosevelt elementary schools with a half-day kindergarten program offered at all schools.
  
• District Students Receive State Honors for Music and Sustainability
  Students from Happy Valley elementary school and Bellingham, Sehome and Squalicum high schools recently received state honors for musical performances. Columbia Elementary School won a sustainable school award.
