Getting back to baseline

BP is working with governments and communities toward the goal of restoring the Gulf to what it would be like today if the spill had not occurred. This is referred to as “baseline conditions” – the measure used to define restoration goals in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) defines “baseline” as “...the condition of the natural resources and services that would have existed had the incident not occurred....”

Through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process, scientists and technical experts are gathering information about the extent and severity of the spill so that work can get underway on areas of habitat and wildlife populations that have been affected and can be restored. Some restoration may be done quickly, but restoration of some injured resources is a longer-term job that requires cooperative restoration planning.
