Coast Guard responds to two vessels aground near Santa Cruz Island

OXNARD, Calif. — The Coast Guard has responded to a distress call received this morning, August 6, 2009, from two sailing vessels soft aground in Pelican Bay, Santa Cruz Island, Calif.

The distress call came into the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles - Long Beach Command Center just after 10:30 a.m. The two sailing vessels on scene reported they were soft aground and disabled with a total of five people on board.

An HH-65C Dolphin Helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a 41-foot utility boat from Station Channel Islands Harbor were dispatched to the scene. Rescue assets from Vessel Assist responded to the vessels aground as well.

Once on scene, Coast Guard members worked with Vessel Assist to assist both sailing vessels and tow them to Prisoner’s Harbor, Santa Cruz Island without any further incident.
