Investigation Into Collision Continues

SAN PEDRO, Calif. - Coast Guard investigators continue to look into the circumstances of a collision that investigators believe occurred around just after midnight on Oct. 2.

After a large debris field was reported Thursday morning, the Coast Guard opened a marine casualty investigation.  Since the initial report, investigators have been on the water and around the port complex gathering evidence about the collision.

The Coast Guard investigative effort suggests that the 26-foot pleasure craft, registered to two individuals, one of whom being Henry Sanchez of Santa Ana, Calif., may have collided with the barge Islander, which was being towed by the tug Rebel II.  Investigators believed the incident occurred approximately five miles south of the Port of Los Angeles.

The Coast Guard's investigation continues with inter-agency support from the Los Angeles Port Police and Los Angeles Sherriff's department.  Today, dive and sonar equipment were used at the scene of the debris field earlier this afternoon. Dive operation will commence in the morning and as weather allows.
