Coast Guard medevacs cruise ship passenger

SAN DIEGO —A Coast Guard helicopter crew medically evacuated a passenger from a cruise ship 160 miles south of San Diego Friday evening.

The Coast Guard received a call from the crew of the cruise ship, Oosterdam, at 2:30 p.m., stating that a 69-year-old man was suffering from a heart attack and requesting a medical evacuation. A Coast Guard flight surgeon was consulted and recommended a medevac be conducted.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Sector San Diego was launched to conduct the medevac, and a C-130 Hercules airplane from Air Station Sacramento to provide cover during the incident.

The patient was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., in stable condition.

Weather conditions were clear skies, 10 foot seas, and 15 knot winds.
