Coast Guard hosts West Coast Aids to Navigation Olympics

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Five Coast Guard aids to navigation (ATON) crews from across the West Coast gathered to compete in the annual West Coast ATON Olympics held Aug. 13, 2009 on Coast Guard Island.

The crews were from the cutters Aspen, homeported San Francisco; Fir, homeported Astoria, Ore.; Kukui, homeported Honolulu; and George Cobb, homeported Long Beach, Calif.

Crews and ATON teams competed to test their seamanship and buoy-deck operation skills in events, such as the shackle split-key race, flooding and fire fighting race, chain faking race, tug-o-war, and the shackle "heat-and-beat" race.

The events culminated a three-day conference where ship crews and land-based ATON teams were instructed on specialized tasks, such as tower climbing, buoy-deck rigging, lighted ATON maintenance, implementation of new technologies, and ATON positioning.
