WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard is scheduled to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday, 9:30 a.m., at Building 88 of the Coast Guard Yard, 2401 Hawkins Point Road, Baltimore, Md., to mark the establishment of the Surface Forces Logistics Center and Asset Project Office.
The event heralds the stand up of the second in the series of five logistics centers to be established prior to June 2009. Scheduled attendees include U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen and Coast Guard Chief of Staff Vice Adm. Clifford Pearson
The Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center will service more than 200 cutters and 1,800 small boats, providing depot level maintenance, engineering, supply, logistics and information services from acquisition through decommission. The Surface Forces Logistics Center will gradually assume the surface logistics support functions currently provided by the Coast Guard Engineering Logistics Center, Maintenance and Logistics Commands, Naval Engineering Support Units and Industrial Support Activities.
The Asset Project Office's primary roles are to deliver a complete system capability, determine and manage asset lifecycle costs, and develop and implement integrated logistics support for Coast Guard assets. The Asset Project Office will support the acquisition and life cycle management, as well as the development and implementation of integrated logistical support for all legacy and newly acquired assets to ensure cross-programmatic standardization following the Coast Guard's logistics business model. The Asset Project Office will be a clearinghouse for enrolling all Coast Guard assets into the new product line support model.
Editors Note: Media interested in covering this morning's event are asked to contact Dottie Mitchell at (410) 636-7238 and should plan to arrive and be in place not later than 9:15 a.m.
