STATEMENT OF CMDR. BRENDAN C. MCPHERSON, PRESS SECRETARY, REGARDING H.R. 2830 - COAST GUARD AUTHORIZATION ACT OF 2008

WASHINGTON -  The Coast Guard appreciates the House of Representatives' consideration of the views expressed by the Commandant during floor debate and passage of H.R. 2830 (Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2008).  While the Act passed by the House on Thursday includes several provisions that will increase Coast Guard readiness, enhance our ability to enforce laws pertaining to illegal migrant and drug smuggling, and provide improved support for the men and women of the Coast Guard, we have serious concerns about a number of other provisions included in the Act.   We look forward to continuing to work with the Congress to address these concerns.
