ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Today's operations include over flights, vessel lightering, shoreline assessment/cleanup, water quality sampling and wildlife recovery. Crews lightered 16,897 gallons of fuel from the wreck Monday, 8,021 gallons of intermediate fuel oil (IFO) and 8,876 gallons of diesel. To date a total of 128,059 gallons of IFO/diesel/water has been lightered from the Selendang Ayu wreck. Salvage crews stated all recoverable IFO has been removed leaving only diesel and lube oils left to be lightered off the vessel. A remote operated vehicle (ROV) arrived in Dutch Harbor Monday. It will be assembled and tested over the next two days. The ROV will be used to conduct a sub-surface investigation of the wreck and oiling U.S. Fish and Wildlife crews reported 15 dead birds were found Monday. To date a total of 1,503 dead birds have been recovered. Cleanup crews recovered 500 bags (eight cubic yards) of oily waste Monday from Portage Bay. To date 33,991 bags (566 cubic yards) of oily waste has been recovered from the bays. Cleanup crews will continue today at Portage Bay, which shoreline cleanup assessment teams and over flight crews have determined to be the heaviest oiled shoreline. To date, seafood inspections at the Dutch Harbor and Akutan processing plants have found all seafood products free of oil contamination. Inspections are conducted throughout the day and night to check crab and Pollock as they arrive at the docks. Crab processing is estimated to be completed by Friday. The Unified Command has implemented an enhanced program to protect seafood quality. Today's weather in Dutch Harbor consists of clear skies, 15-25 knot winds, three to five foot seas and an air temperature of 37 degrees. | |
