Unified Command press release

Orange drift block sightings

JUNEAU, Alaska - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released 162 orange drift blocks into the water near the Selendang Ayu Wreck site.

The drift block release is part of an experiment to simulate the drift of oiled bird carcasses. The blocks are orange, about 9-by-4-by-4 inches in size and contain a silver tag on them.

During the drift experiment, there is the potential that oil spill response personnel or community members may find an orange drift block on the beach or observe them floating in the water.

Anyone who observes an orange drift block in the water is asked not to attempt collecting it. The purpose of the experiment is to allow the block to drift to the beach where it potentially could be collected.

Persons finding an orange block on a beach should note the time and location of the find, collect the block, and return it to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Incident Command Center located in the Grand Aleutian Hotel.
