ANCHORAGE, Alaska– The Coast Guard will conduct its final Arctic Domain Awareness flight of 2009 Monday in support of testing personnel and equipment capabilities, identifying challenges, surveying sea ice and monitoring vessel traffic. "The bi-monthly patrol of coastal Alaska and offshore waters provide a platform to monitor many vital areas of the Arctic," said Lt. Cmdr. Steven McKechnie, Air Station Kodiak C-130 assistant operations officer. "Our mission also provides an opportunity for scientists and media to be introduced and educated regarding Coast Guard operations in the region." Monday’s flight will survey the Alaskan coastline and observe Kivalina, Barrow, Prudhoe Bay and Galena. A NOAA contractor will be on board collecting samples of methane and carbon dioxide emissions in the vicinity of Brooks Range for analysis and ongoing research. Editors note: Flights are based out of Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak, this flight will stop in Anchorage where media may embark 9:30 a.m. Monday at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Interested media should contact PA1 David Mosley at 907-271-2660 or 907-321-4510 for further information and to reserve a seat. Seating is limited. |
