JUNEAU, Alaska - In an effort to promote boating safety and ensure that vessels are in compliance with Coast Guard regulations throughout Southeast Alaska, Coast Guard Sector Juneau units commenced their summer pulse operations in April. The mission of the Coast Guard is to provide better search and rescue response, professional at-sea law enforcement, effective dockside safety examinations and drug and alcohol program inspector audits. The Coast Guard is focusing on the Southeast Alaska port communities and waterways of Craig, Klawock, Petersburg, Wrangell, Hoonah, Elfin Cove, Pelican, Yakutat, Port Alexander, Baranof Warm Springs, Haines, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Icy Straight. Voluntary dockside examinations have commenced throughout various port communities and will continue through the summer and include uninspected passenger vessel examinations, commercial fishing vessel safety examinations and recreational vessel safety checks. Since the operation began in April, the Coast Guard has conducted approximately 44 dockside exams and terminated 10 vessels due to safety and regulation violations. |
