Coast Guard, locals search for missing man off Corolla, N.C.

COROLLA, N.C. - The Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for a 60-year-old man off Corolla Beach near the five-mile marker Sunday.

A Currituck County 911 operator called Sector North Carolina watchstanders at 12:46 a.m. requesting assistance with searching for the man.

An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City and a 47-foot rescue boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet arrived on scene and are searching for the man.

The helicopter crew completed two searches and returned to the air station to refuel. After refueling, they will return to continue searching.

An incident command post has been set up to coordinate the search with the Coast Guard, Corolla Ocean Rescue, Corolla Fire and Rescue, and the Currituck Sheriff's Department.

"Any time we don't find them right away, there's going to be multiple agencies working together to find them," said Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Sprague, the Coast Guard representative at the ICP.
