COROLLA, N.C. - The Coast Guard, Corolla fire and sheriff's departments and Ocean Rescue have been searching for a 12-year-old boy off Corolla, since he went missing Friday morning.
The boy's mother called 911 reporting her son was boogy boarding on the ocean side of Corolla, and she lost sight of him after he went under the water. She watched the boogy board wash ashore without her son.
Dispatchers notified Sector North Carolina watchstanders at about 10:45 a.m. The watchstanders launched a Station Oregon Inlet 47-foot rescue boat crew and an Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60T Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew to search with the lifeguards.
"Currituck County along with Coast Guard stood up an incident command post in order to best organize search and rescue efforts," Chief Petty Officer Max Stel, a watchstander at Sector North Carolina. "Coast Guard is searching with the local fire department, sheriff's department, and ocean rescue."
