Coast Guard closes Gilmerton Bridge waterway

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Hampton Roads has closed the Gilmerton Bridge waterway to all traffic due to debris following a collision into the bridge's north side fendering system and navigation lights Wednesday afternoon.

At 3:56 p.m., Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Hampton Roads received a report that the tug Steven McAllister collided with the bridge while pushing a barge.

The Army Corps of Engineers and City of Chesapeake will conduct a survey of the damage at first light tomorrow. A safety zone has been established in the vicinity of the bridge. The waterway will remain closed until repairs and clean up of the debris have been made.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
