Coast Guard members donate hair

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Civilian and active duty Coast Guard members Lt. Cdr. Kerry Karwan, Chief Warrant Officer Margaret Rankin, Petty Officer 2nd Class Dawn Marie Beene, Cindy Smith, Donna Pass-Otteni, Petty Officer 2nd Class Crystal Brewer, and her sister Adryan Chilcote, hold up locks of their hair during a charity event at Integrated Support Command Portsmouth, Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

The group of women collected over 80 inches of hair to donate to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hair prosthetics to children suffering from a condition called alopecia areata, which causes hair loss and has no known cure or cause.

Karwan organized the event in order to donate hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing hair prosthetics to children under the age of 18. Most of the children helped by the organization, like 5-year-old Smith, have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure.
