In This E-mail Doug's Weekly Reflection Blest2Bless Thoughts Weekly Update Preparing for Sunday Shout Out Prayers One Service Sundays and a Movie Review- This upcoming Sunday will begin our FPC Summer Sundays. This is the 3rd Summer that we will all gather for one Service throughout the days of Summer. This has become a very special tradition for many of us- and like all special tradtions, it holds a bit of challege as well.
We are one church, we worship one Lord, and all believe in the same essentials of Faith, and we practice it in the same way- we just like to sing in different styles. We have 2 services that have the same order most every Sunday, sometimes even the same songs, but the styles are different enough to cause a fair bit of friction. One group is a big fan of the classical tradition, the music of Hymns, organs, and choirs. They love the depth and the tradition of singing the old songs together, they like their words and prayers to be in the bulletin, not in screen up front, and they like the songs to stand alone, not right up next to another song. The other group is more excited about a guitar, piano, bass and drums. They love to sing the old songs in new ways, and the enjoy the new songs as well, they enjoy the words on the screen, and they enjoy it when a few songs meld right into each other.
So when we gather for one service it is inevitable that one group can feel slighted or underserved. We do not practice a blended worship as others have chosen to. When you join us this Summer you may find a classical service, or a contemporary service. The music will be chosen with great care knowing that not everyone is used to this style.
So the good news- if the music is not your favorite you have some opportuntities. You can pray for those whose style it is. You can rest assured that the next week will be more your style. You have an opportunity to experience a new style of singing, who knows, you may actually enjoy it, or at least experience God in a new way. The other good news is that the kids will be worshipping with us (at least those over 5 years old)- how fun is that??
These are services to treasure that we are one church, kids included, let us celebrate together.
In His Unity,
Doug B.
Movie Review- OK I am biased. When we were in Berkeley we had a 7 year small group with 4 other couples, one of whom directed movies for Pixar. We think he is a great guy who makes great movies. He has come out with a new movie called "Up." His previous film was "Monsters Inc." As one can tell, these movies take a long time to put together.
"Up" is a delight. It is a animated feature of uncommon layer and relationship. It is sad and hard and happy and blessed all at the same time. It looks at a widower who is seeking to live the adventure of life. It is worth taking time our next rainy day to buy a ticket and enjoy a movie the way they used to make them- It also has a great dog named Doug- how great is that?
If you did not read the story of the dying girl who's wish was to see "Up"- it is right here- but pack some kleenex- http://www.ocregister.com/articles/pixar-up-movie-2468059-home-show
Here is an up vote for Pixar, for Pete, and for UP- 2 thumbs up-
Blest2Bless-BlestLife Practice- Keep reading the Sermon on the Mount, the last sermon on The Sermon is this Sunday.
