JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Steven M. Elliot, a Jacksonville native, accepted the Coast Guard Commendation Medal Saturday awarded posthumously to his father, a former Coast Guardsman, at the Coast Guard Reserve all hands meeting aboard Naval Station Mayport, Fla.

Elliot is accepting the medal for his late father, Seaman First Class Franklin P. Elliot who is cited for outstanding achievement and heroism for his efforts during a shipboard fire April 24, 1943.

While serving aboard the now-decommissioned Coast Guard Tug Hudson, Franklin Elliot courageously volunteered to help extinguish a fire aboard the S.S. EL Estero, a 325-foot Panamanian freighter moored in New York Harbor. The fire threatened to ignite more than 1,300 tons of explosives on board the El Estero and endangered approximately 5,000 tons of ordnance and explosives surrounding the vessel pier-side.

Franklin Elliot and his shipmates took the freighter under tow, away from the harbor and proceeded to fill the vessel with water until it sunk, preventing a potential disaster and saving countless number of lives.
