| Coast Guard responds to Caribbean Petroleum Company tank farm explosion in Puerto Rico |

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Coast Guard National Strike Force response teams arrived to Puerto Rico Friday afternoon to support local and federal authorities responding to an explosion that occured Friday morning at the Caribbean Petroleum Company tank farm in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.The National Strike Force is a special team under the National Contingency Plan designed to support the Federal On-Scene Coordinator during oil discharges and hazardous materials releases. Coast Guard Sector San Juan personnel have been working alongside local and federal authorities since the incident began Friday morning. Capt. Eduardo Pino, Captain of the Port of San Juan, has established a safety zone along the shoreline from Punta Cataño to the Puerto Nuevo Intership facility. No vessels are permitted to enter this safety zone without prior approval from the Captain of the Port. Vessels or boaters violating this safety zone may be subject to fines up to $32,500. |
