Coast Guard medevacs diver near Venice Inlet

VENICE INLET, Fla. - The Coast Guard performed a medical evacuation of a 22-year-old male diver about 25-miles offshore of Venice Inlet at about 12 p.m. Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Fla., received a call at about 11:30 a.m., reporting that Russ Harris, of Venice was aboard an anchored 21-foot pleasure craft free diving on a wreck near the Venice Inlet and was found unconcious near the dive area.

Divers aboard the vessel recovered Harris and brought him to the surface. CPR was started immediately.

Search and rescue coordinators from Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, launched an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla.

The HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew hoisted Harris aboard the aircraft and transferred him to Lee Memorial Hospital at about 2 p.m.
