Coast Guard rescues two in frigid weather |
|
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Coast Guard rescue units from Station Georgetown, S.C., and Air Facility Charleston, S.C., responded to a mayday call at 5 a.m. today to save two boaters 15 miles south of Georgetown in the South Santee River, S.C. Donald S. Hucks, 28, and Steve Hucks, 37, both Conway, S.C., residents called the Coast Guard when they noticed their 15-foot boat was taking on water in the South Santee River. They grounded the vessel along the shoreline waiting in the 39 degree weather for Coast Guard assistance. The helicopter crew from Air Facility Charleston and the boat crew from Station Georgetown arrived to assist the Hucks at 6:15 a.m. Both were taken on board the Coast Guard vessel in good condition. Both boaters were wearing a lifejacket and proper clothes in preperation for the frigid weather this morning. A commercial salvage crew pumped out the water from their vessel. Neither man needed medical attention and both were safely transferred to the commercial salvage vessel to be taken back to the dock. Being properly equipped, prepared for the weather and familiar with what to do in a distress situation directly contributed to a timely and precise Coast Guard response, and prevented this situation from turning into a tragedy for the two survivors and their families. -uscg- The U.S. Coast Guard is a military, maritime, multi-mission service within the |
