Coast Guard helicopter crew medevacs head trauma patient

San Juan, Puerto Rico - A Coast Guard helicopter crew was launched yesterday evening from Air Station Borinquen in Aguadilla to transport a seriously injured bicycle accident victim from the Culebra Medical Center in Culebra (CDT) to Centro Medico for emergency medical treatment.

At approximately 7:40 p.m. Wednesday evening, the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in San Juan received a request from the CDT in Culebra about a 50-year-old man who required emergency medical transportation after receiving a serious head injury from a bicycle accident.  Police and Aero-Med helicopters were not available to transport the patient.  A Coast Guard flight surgeon determined that the patient should be immediately transported to obtain a CAT-scan and medical treatment that was not available at the CDT.

The patient was transferred to Culebra Airport via ambulance then airlifted by the Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and safely transported to Isla Grande airport at 10:30 p.m. where an awaiting ambulance then transferred the patient to Centro Medico in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico.

The U.S. Coast Guard is a military, maritime, multi-mission service within the
Department of Homeland Security dedicated to protecting the safety and security of America.
