Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Cruise Ship Passenger

MIAMI -- The Coast Guard suspended its search at 2:47 p.m. today for the man believed to have fallen off the cruise ship Mariner of the Seas while transiting from Cape Canaveral, Fla., to Coco Cay, Bahamas.

Daniel Dipiero, 21, a resident of Augusta, Ohio, was last seen around midnight Sunday.  He was reported missing at approximately 11 a.m. Monday when friends he was traveling with could not find him on the ship.  After the cruise ship completed on board announcements, searches of the ship and sweeps of Coco Cay the Coast Guard was notified at 7 p.m. Monday.

Approximately 900 square miles of ocean were searched by rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., Coast Guard Air Station Miami, Coast Guard Cutter Dolphin and the Bahamian Air and Sea Rescue Association.
