Coast Guard and Milwaukee Brewers partner to make boating safer MILWAUKEE – Coast Guard Group Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Brewers are partnering to make boating safer on Lake Michigan, rewarding those children under 13 who wear their lifejackets. During random Coast Guard law enforcement boardings that check for compliance with federal laws, boarding officers will be enforcing the 2003 federal law requiring children under the age of 13 to wear lifejackets. Children wearing their lifejackets will receive a certificate for a free Milwaukee Brewers ticket at any game during the 2005 season. “It’s a win-win,” said Chris Barlow, Brewers Manager of Group Sales. “The opportunity to recognize safe boating practices especially among children is a program the Brewers stand solidly behind.” Recreational boating fatalities are the second leading cause of transportation-related fatalities after automobile accidents. Nearly 700 recreational boaters died last year, 20 in Wisconsin alone. In 17 of those 20 cases, the victim was not wearing a lifejacket. “Today’s lifejackets are more attractive, more comfortable and easier to wear than ever before,” said Lieutenant Junior Grade Boris Montatsky of Group Milwaukee. “The 2005 National Safe Boating Campaign really drives that message home.” Coast Guard boat crews from Kenosha, Milwaukee, Sheboygan, Two Rivers, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island will carry out the program. The Coast Guard handed out 1,200 certificates in 2004. “We’re continually looking for innovative ways to get out our safe boating messages,” Captain Scott LaRochelle, commanding officer of Group Milwaukee said. “I tip my cap to the Milwaukee Brewers organization for their generous spirit in supporting this initiative.” ### Media advisory: For additional information or to schedule a ride along aboard a Coast Guard boat on patrol, contact Lt. j.g.
