Coast Guard rescues five in Arcadia, Mich.

ARCADIA, Mich. – The U.S. Coast Guard rescued five people when their 22-foot vessel struck the breakwall, here, at approximately 11:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Coast Guard Station Frankfort was notified about the vessel in distress and was informed that four of the passengers had safely made it onto the breakwall, but the operator was still aboard the vessel.

Station Frankfort dispatched its government vehicle to recover the four on the breakwall and launched their 30-foot Utility Boat-Medium (UBM) to recover the operator and put the disabled vessel in tow.

The vessel began to take on water as it was being towed into the harbor and the operator entered the water. The UBM broke tow and recovered the man. It was determined the operator was intoxicated once he was safely brought ashore.

“Every one was safe once we brought them to shore,” said Petty Officer Julia Sansocie, Coxswain at Station Frankfort. “There were no injuries.”

The Coast Guard would like to remind boaters that boating under the influence is unsafe and illegal. Anyone determined to be operating a vessel while intoxicated will be taken into custody and transferred to local authorities.
