Coast Guard Responds to Oil Sheen on White Lake

MUSKEGON, Mich.-- Coast Guard Station Muskegon and Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven responded to the report of an oil sheen on White Lake in Whitehall, Mich. at approximately 10 a.m.   

Approximately 80 gallons of diesel fuel was released from a ruptured refueling pipe on a pier at the Whitehall Municipal Marina.  The source of the fuel has been secured.

Coast Guard Station Muskegon arrived on scene with a 30-foot response boat.  Pollution investigators from Sector Lake Michigan’s Field Office in Grand Haven, the Whitehall Fire Department and local HAZMAT assisted in the response.        

"It is the Coast Guard's responsibility to respond to all reports of possible pollution on any navigable waterway in the United States. Today was a prime example of how local agencies also play a vital role in responding to these threats to our waters, and we're thankful for their quick and effective response actions," said Cmdr. Richard Reinemann, Sector Lake Michigan Deputy Commander.
