COAST GUARD LOCATES OVERDUE BOATERS ALPENA, Mich. - Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City located two overdue men clinging to partially submerged fishing boat 20 miles west of Alpena, Mich. in Fletcher Pond in the early morning hours Friday. "We coordinated a search with the Air Force and the sheriff's department (Montmorency). The helo (HH-65C rescue helicopter) held a position with a spotlight and hoisted up the 40-year-old man," said Health Services Technician 2nd Class Jeremiah Romankowski, Officer-of-the-day. A civilian boater rescued the other 25-year-old man. The condition of the men upon location was mild hypothermia. Both were transferred to awaiting Emergency Medical Services on shore in Alpena. Apparently, the two men launched their 12-foot green aluminum skiff from Lyon's Landing and went fishing at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday. A friend contacted the Montmorency Sheriff's Department after the two had not returned by midnight. The Coast Guard worked closely with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Montmorency Sheriff's Department and local fire departments to locate the men safely.
