USCG TO PRESENT RESERVIST WITH DHS CITATION

OSWEGO, N.Y. - A U.S. Coast Guard Reservist, who is also an Oswego Deputy Sheriff, will receive the Coast Guard's Certificate of Valor for heroic actions performed on November 24, 2005, during a ceremony, here, on Wednesday.

Jeremy L. Plyler will be presented with the certificate by Rear Adm. Peter V. Neffenger, commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District, at Coast Guard Station Oswego on July 16, 2008, at 2 p.m.

Plyler is being recognized for his heroic actions, as a deputy sheriff, when he pulled a woman out of a submerged car.  During a winter storm a vehicle went into the water. Plyler arrived and solicited the help of a nearby boater who took him out to a spot where bubbles from the car were surfacing. Plyler dove underwater into 36 degree water, broke the window with his hand and pulled the driver out of the vehicle.  Plyler and the driver were brought back to shore and the woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The Certificate of Valor may be granted to both uniformed personnel and civilians from either inside or outside of the Department of Homeland Security who have exhibited courage above and beyond the call of duty in saving a life or attempting to save a life, and/or whose actions put them at extreme personal risk.
