COAST GUARD RESCUES SIX FROM INDIANA CAMPGROUND DETROIT - U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit helicopters are assisting with flood relief operations in Indiana. An Air Station HH-65 Dolphin crew rescued six people, Sunday, from a camping area approximately 40 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Five adults, two infants and one toddler were stranded at a camping area because rising waters cut them off from any means of departure. They contacted emergency teams, via cell phone, who dispatched the Coast Guard helicopter. The helicopter crew located the campers and deployed a rescue swimmer to assist with the hoist of the campers. The swimmer organized the group, explained the evolution, and custom-made hearing protection for the seven- and eight-month-old babies. Three adults and three children, two which were in safety seats, were hoisted and transported to a safe area. The remaining two adults were transported out of the park using all-terrain vehicles. "This is a great example of how the federal agencies coordinate efforts under the national response framework," said Jerome A. Popiel, Incident Management Branch Chief for the Ninth Coast Guard District.
