COAST GUARD HELICOPTERS TO CONDUCT ICE RESCUE TRAINING

SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE-

Helicopters from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit will be conducting Ice Rescue Training near the DNR boat launch located near the main gate of Selfridge Air National Guard Base and 20 Mile Road the morning of Friday, February 2nd.

Air Station Detroit is one of only a handful of Coast Guard helicopter units nationwide to regularly perform ice rescues, and local aircrews are taking advantage of the thickening ice on Lake St. Claire to hone their skills.  The training will consist of scenarios including rescuing simulated survivors from a variety of conditions using Rescue Swimmers, hoisting operations, and possibly landing on the ice.

The last two winters have been unusually warm which has meant little or no ice to train on, so for some newly arrived crews this will be their first time practicing on solid ice and they welcome the opportunity.

Training will begin at 0930.  Anyone interested in observing and/or filming these activities is encouraged to contact LT Ryan Lampe for further information at 586-307-2747.
