THREE STATIONS IN SECTOR WIN SUMNER I. KIMBALL AWARD MILWAUKEE, WI. - Coast Guard stations Two Rivers, Sturgeon Bay and Kenosha can now be considered the best of the best in the Coast Guard after each station received the Coast Guard's Sumner I. Kimball Readiness Award. After an in-depth review of the three stations by an independent Coast Guard Standardization (STAN) team, the Coast Guard has awarded the Sumner I. Kimball Readiness Award to these stations for having unit readiness and platform standardization of the highest caliber. With a score of 50 being the highest, Two Rivers achieved a 46 while Sturgeon Bay and Kenosha both earned a 48. The Sumner I. Kimball Readiness Award was established in April of 2001 to recognize Coast Guard Boat Force units that are truly the best of the best. Named after Sumner Increase Kimball, General Superintendent of the Life-Saving Service from 1878 -1916, the award promotes organization and preparedness as Kimball was noted for himself. Only a mere 10 percent of all Coast Guard small boat stations get the Sumner I. Kimball Readiness Award. To have three stations in the same Sector merit the award is a testament to the high quality of work being done here on Lake Michigan. "The stations on this lake (Michigan) are the best of the best in all of the Coast Guard," said LTJG Boris Montatsky. "To have this awarded to the stations is a great honor and a privilege." A ceremony will be held on a later date to be determined to formally award each station. For more information contact the Sector Lake Michigan Public Affairs Officer at (414) 747-7145. -#-
