TUG WITH BARGE ON FIRE IN MATAGORDA BAY

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Coast Guard is responding to a fire on board the tug Nathan James in Port Lavaca Bay north of Port O'Connor, Texas.

The Coast Guard received a MayDay call over VHF-16 marine radio at 12:20 p.m. from tug Grace Nichol, relaying information about the tug on fire. A Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi rescue helicopter and Coast Guard Station Port O'Connor rescue boats were dispatched to assist.

The three crew members, Captain Frank Brooks, Dustin Pruett, and James Keitti, were safely rescued by the tug Brown River that was first on scene. A Port Lavaca fire rescue boat arrived on scene along with a Coast Guard Station Port O'Connor rescue boat and both were unable to put the fire out.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Corpus Christi is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Video of the burning tug is available at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi Ocean Drive Gate until 6 p.m. today.
