WHO: U.S. Coast Guard WHAT: U.S. Coast Guard Birthday WHEN: Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 at 11:15 a.m. WHERE: Zephyr Field BACKGROUND: The Coast Guard is one of the five military services which make up the Armed Forces of the United States of America. It exists to defend and preserve the United States as a free nation. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 is the anniversary of the Coast Guard's founding and its members will celebrate 219 years of long-standing tradition and history. This anniversary highlights the Coast Guard's men and women as well as their honor, respect and devotion to duty to defending and supporting America's maritime domain. The Coast Guard has a proud history of service and willingness to evolve to meet the country's maritime needs. From its first days as the Revenue Cutter Service to today's Coast Guard, our men and women have committed themselves to protecting and securing our nation. Our guardians have been the forefront of increasing the safety, security and prosperity of the nation, technological innovations and management improvements.
