Coast Guard suspends search for missing fisherman

New Orleans — The Coast Guard has suspended its search at approximately 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 3, 2009, for a missing fisherman in Breton Sound, near Shell Beach, La.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call at approximately 7 a.m., Monday, June 1, 2009, from a crewmember aboard the fishing vessel, Helgie Hovland, reporting that two men fell overboard in Breton Sound approximately 45 miles southeast of New Orleans.

One crewmember was rescued by the crew of the Helgie Hovland and the other, Willie Boggs, 26, of Wiggins, Miss., is still missing. 

The Coast Guard searched with the following assets:

  • MH-65C Dolphin Rescue Helicopters and crews from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
  • An HC-144A Ocean Sentry search plane and crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala.
  • HU-25 Falcon search plane from Aviation Training Center Mobile
  • A 33-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Venice, La.
