COAST GUARD RESCUES DOG AND 2 BOATERS, 1 MISSING
NEW ORLEANS - Several U.S. Coast Guard units from New Orleans and local agencies are searching tonight for a missing boater, a half mile north of the south shore of Lake Ponchartrain, in Metairie, La. The Causeway Police notified the Coast Guard today shortly after 4 p.m., that an unmanned boat was turning circles west of the Causeway Bridge, and reported three people were in the water. A rescue helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans, and three rescue crews from Station New Orleans located two people and a dog when they arrived onscene. A boat crew rescued one man, the dog, and pulled an unconscience man with no pulse from the lake. The crew administered CPR on the unconscience man and found a weak pulse. Both men and dog were transferred to awaiting emergency medical services personnel at the Bonnabel boat launch. The two men were taken by ambulance to East Jefferson Hospital in Metairie. None of the boaters were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident. A boat crew from Station New Orleans and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol worked together to stop the unmanned boat. The Coast Guard towed the boat back to the boat launch, where Louisiana Fish and Wildlife agents took the boat into custody, and will be investigating the cause of the accident. The Coast Guard reminds all boaters to wear their life jackets while out on the water at all times, and encourage operators to attach their life jacket lanyard to the kill switch of the boat incase of an accident. ### |
