6 LANCHA FISHERMEN APPREHENDED |
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Six people were apprehended by the Coast Guard and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for illegally fishing in U.S. waters 15 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border early this morning.
The six Mexican nationals, Jose Jalazar-Hernandez, 28, Juan Velazquez-Carbajal, 18, Miguel Patricio-Yanez, 32, Jaun Gomez-Cruz, 18, Victor Aguilar-Rivera, 44, and Aaron Silua-Melo, 21, were turned over to the CBP.
Coast Guard Station South Padre Island crews, aboard two interceptor boats, captured two lancha crews while they were fishing illegally in the exclusive economic zone. Both lanchas were actively fishing when caught; one had five sharks onboard and 40-50 sharks in its gill net. The other laucha had more than 130 sharks in its gill net. A third lancha was spotted while the Coast Guard crews were escorting the other two lanchas into port. The Coast Guard crews pursued the lancha until it broke down and drifted ashore. The lancha crew was then apprehended by CBP.
