ExxonMobil Pipeline Company (EMPCo), in conjunction with the Coast Guard and the State of Louisiana, is responding to a crude oil leak that occurred on December 2 and is located about six miles north of Grand Isle, Louisiana.  The leak is from the company's  Grand Isle to Little Lake pipeline system.   The size of the leak is preliminarily estimated to be 350 barrels. EMPCo operational data indicated an abnormal condition in the pipeline system at approximately 9 a.m. (CT) December 2 and immediately shut the system down.  Containment and recovery of the oil began as soon as the spill was confirmed and continues to expand at this time. Separate investigations into the cause of the incident are underway by EMPCo and Coast Guard Marine Safety Office New Orleans.

EMPCo personnel and contractors are actively involved in the response effort, which is being coordinated with the Coast Guard, the Louisiana State Oil Spill Coordinator, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and other agencies.  As of this morning, more than 16,900 feet of boom have been deployed to contain the spill, and seven skimmer vessels are involved in cleanup activities.  Oil recovery activities are underway.

There has been some limited shoreline impact in the vicinity of Racoon Lake.  Environmental experts are on site and steps have been taken to minimize any further impacts.

EMPCo deeply regrets that this incident has occurred.  The joint responders are continuing to respond quickly and appropriately. The primary objectives of the response effort are to safely contain and recover the oil, protect the public and minimize the impact on natural resources.
