COAST GUARD INVESTIGATES ATCHAFALAYA PIPELINE RUPTURE UPDATE: PHOTOS AVAILABLE |
NEW ORLEANS – Coast Guard marine safety personnel are assisting with the investigation of the pipeline fire and rupture that occurred shortly after midnight in the Atchafalaya Basin, La.
An investigator from Marine Safety Office Morgan City is at the scene of the incident interviewing the crew of the dredge barge that struck the Gulf South Pipeline.
According to reports, the pollution resulting from the initial impact was minimal and has been secured.
The waterway remains closed due to obstruction from the pipeline and to facilitate diving operations to salvage and evaluate damage.
A boarding team from the MSO was conducting a maritime boarding about five miles away at the time of the initial fire. They were among the first on scene, arriving in minutes, and became the primary emergency response crew.
