Release No. 020-03

At approximately 5:24 p.m. on November 6, 2003, Apache Corporation reported a natural gas well control incident and fire at its Deer Island Field CL&F 28-2 well in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana located at Lat 29 28.725N, Lon 91 08.145W.  There were no injuries, and all 18 personnel were evacuated safely.  The well is located approximately 14.5 miles south of Amelia, Louisiana.  The well remains on fire as of 10:00 a.m. Friday.  Responding to the incident, Apache Corporation, the United States Coast Guard, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office; as well as, other local and state agencies, have set up an incident Unified Command Post in Houma, Louisiana.  The site of the incident is in a semi-remote location and poses no danger to the public, as long as no one goes near the fire.  Authorities ask hunters and recreational fishermen to stay out of the area until the fire is extinguished and under control.

Apache Corporation has hired a well control company to extinguish the fire and bring the well under control.  The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office is providing personnel to enforce a federal safety zone placed around the well control incident to keep recreational boaters, fishermen and hunters out of the area.  An aircraft no fly zone will be implemented to keep aircraft out of the response area.

The well control incident caused no pollution, but oil spill containment equipment and resources have been put in place to protect the environment in the event that there is a discharge.
