FINAL UPDATE: COAST GUARD RESPONDS TO BARGE BREAKAWAY

ST. LOUIS - The Coast Guard, working with Matteson Marine, Alter Barge Lines, and railroad representatives, oversaw the successful recovery of a grain barge that was lodged against the foot of a bridge near Burlington, Iowa, today.

The barge was pulled off of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad bridge and secured in a fleeting area at mile 403 on the Upper Mississippi River at 4:30 p.m. today.

The barge was one of five that broke free Thursday morning from the Matteson Marine facility in Burlington, Iowa. The other four barges were quickly recovered.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
