SAINT LOUIS - (From left) Deckhands Shane Ducote, Randy Boykin, and Captain David Keeane of the towing vessel Elizabeth Brown receive a Coast Guard Public Service Award presented by Captain Sharon k. Richey, commander of Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River here, April 23, 2008.
The crew frrom the Elizabeth Brown rescued a fellow crewmember, Jerald Taggart, from the Mississippi River 20 miles north of St. Genevieve, Mo., on January 27, 2007. Taggart was sucked underneath six loaded coal barges when Keene used the propeller wash to push Taggart from under the barges. Taggart was pulled from the water by the vessel's deckhands. Keene administered CPR reviving Taggart and the crew looked after Taggart until they were able to reach the dock.
