Dear Families, Our hearts go out to students and colleagues at Whatcom Middle School. This is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate what a strong community we are at Fairhaven. Our PTSA, our teachers, our custodians, cooks, and everyone on the staff are ready to provide assistance as soon as the district plan is in place. Today, our students brainstormed creative ideas for how to welcome and support the WMS students should they be sent to Fairhaven. Everyone is bursting with a sincere desire to help. Thank you for your many offerings of support. Please watch for forthcoming information from the district and for opportunities to help.
Good thoughts! Deirdre O’Neill
School News
The National Geographic Bee will be held January 6, 2009 during first and second periods at Fairhaven Middle School! Within the next two months Fairhaven students will participate in a preliminary classroom Geographic Bee before the school wide event. Our school winner for the past two years even earned his way to the Washington State Geographic Bee for both his 7th and 8th grade years at FMS! It is now time to dust off the old Atlas or simply use Google Earth to begin a little study time of your map skills. Renew your interest in Civil War places, names of rivers all across the US or what crops are grown in the state of Kansas! Watching Jeopardy each night also helps update your Geographic knowledge. The web site to try a daily GeoBee question is: www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/today.
Here are three sample GeoBee questions to help you quiz yourself, friends and family:
1) Wrigley Field, built in 1914, is the second oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. This stadium is located in what city located on Lake Michigan?
2) The oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the New World is located on the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola in which country?
3) Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, where sparkling alpine streams and high-altitude glacial lakes alternate with dense forests and rugged peaks, is associated with which iconic feature of the West?
